How do you know when a dog is suffering and needs to be put down?

My 9 year old Golden has CHF, he has asthma, his tendons/muscles in his throat are weakened and the valves to his lungs are hardening. He is on 7 different medicines and I just want to know how I will know when it is time so he is not suffering. He has good days and bad days. On the bad he struggles to breathe and gags, throwing up and just lays around. On other days he still lays around most of the time but doesn’t struggle to breathe or throw up.

Thank you so much for your question and I am sorry to hear about your Golden. This is one of the most challenging decisions that we face as veterinarians and as pet owners. I always talk to my owners about QOL or quality of life and suggest using a QOL scale to help owners decide when its the right time. I have attached a commonly used scoring chart that you should try.
