Sun’s out, paws out: How to keep pets safe all summer long
Running away, anxiety, stress, and aggression are all symptoms seen in dogs and cats who may think the world is ending in the next coming weeks. Fireworks, festivals, and lots of other summer celebrations and holidays are to be expected this time of year, and every year, thousands of pets go missing or fall ill.
As a responsible pet owner, it is your duty to make sure all your pets are away from fireworks, busy crowds, and other hazardous situations during the holiday season. Whether you’re heading out to the lake for tailgates and barbeques or setting off fireworks on your block, keep your pets safe, secure, and calm with these ten tips!
- Keep your pets indoors: Inside the home is the safest place for pets to be. Have someone stay with them to soothe them if they’re anxious, and leave their favorite snacks, toys, and snuggle companions with them to ease the stress of loud, vibrating fireworks and parties in a safe space just for them.
- Dispose of all fireworks: Poppers thrown on the ground, sparklers, and other used fireworks are extremely dangerous if ingested or touched by curious pets. Make sure all fireworks are properly disposed of after use to prevent choking, poisoning, and burns.
- Secure all windows and doors: Did you know major holidays have some of the highest rates of missing pets? Loud noises can trigger your pet to run off, so be sure that windows and doors are securely closed to prevent them from escaping.
- Keep microchips up to date: Pets often go missing during large celebrations, so increase their chances of being returned safely by keeping their microchip up to date with your current address and contact information, as well as any disabilities and medications they may need.
- Drink responsibly: Fourth of July celebrations that involve flammables, crowds, and substances can be a recipe for disaster if not managed carefully. Stay alert, drink responsibly, and keep fireworks far away from people, pets, and objects that could catch fire or cause injury by keeping a watchful eye at all times.
- Exercise pets beforehand: Burning off energy before the festivities will not only give your pet some much-needed quality time and attention, but it will also tire them out so they may not even care about the fireworks. Bring out their favorite toys, bathe them, and spend some extra outdoor time with them to encourage (hopefully) a restful sleep. Don’t forget the extra treats!
- Keep food and drink out of reach: The overflow of food is easy to drop and spill on floors, and hungry pets find the smell of barbecue and spinach dip tempting. Keep food and trash in secure areas pets can’t reach by climbing on tables or digging through bins.
- Stay connected: Neighborhood and community apps, as well as pages for your local animal rescues and shelters, are great ways to support fellow pet owners by keeping an eye out for missing or runaway pets. If you see a pet without its owner, try to get it to a safe location and contact these social channels immediately.
- Check your vehicle: During the summer months (especially when fireworks are present), some animals like to hide under parked cars and other secluded spots. Before driving, check to make sure no critters are underneath your vehicle.
- Secure swimming areas: If you’re hosting a pool party or celebrating on the beach, make sure your pet wears a life vest if they cannot swim. Otherwise, close off all fenced areas of the pool or keep them leashed to avoid accidental drownings and toxic water consumption.
