Fluff out the fur: 9 at-home pet grooming tips for summer

Long hair, short hair, curly or straight—every pet has a beautiful and unique coat that shines just as brightly as their personality! But, as summer approaches, it is important to stay on top of grooming to keep them comfortable and protected from the summer sun and everything the season brings with it.

For pets in between professional grooming visits, here are 9 tips to help your pet have the shiniest coat at the park!

  1. Use the right tools: For at-home grooming, make sure you’re using the proper tools based on your pet’s coat type. Using the wrong tools can lead to discomfort or ineffective grooming, which can result in further health issues.
  2. Brush every day: Regular brushing helps prevent tangles and mats, especially after baths. It also helps distribute natural oils for a healthier coat.
  3. Bathe regularly: Long days of running through grassy and muddy fields require additional baths, but avoid scrubbing them up too much, as excessive bathing can dry out their skin. Use gentle shampoos designed for pets and dry as much water out of their coats as possible.
  4. Clean ears regularly: For pets who love swimming and frolicking with the water hose, be sure to clean and dry their ears after water exposure to prevent infections caused by trapped moisture.
  5. Keep an appropriate coat length: Depending on your pet’s breed, shaving too short can cause sunburn, while leaving the coat too long may lead to overheating. Talk to your vet or groomer to find the best length for your pet.
  6. Keep nails clipped: Daily walks can help wear down nails, but regular trimming is still important to prevent pain, movement problems, or injury.
  7. Check for pests: Mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks are at their peak in summer. These pests can hide in your pet’s fur and cause serious issues like Lyme disease. Stock up on a few topical creams and solutions if you notice any bug bites.
  8. Watch for skin irritation: Heat, humidity, and bugs can cause rashes, swelling, and allergic flare-ups. If you notice redness, flaking, or excessive itching, consult your vet for treatment.
  9. Maintain a healthy diet: Just like humans, a nutritious diet and plenty of hydration are key to healthy skin and fur. Feed your pet high-quality food, keep them well-hydrated, and steer clear of toxic foods like grapes, onions, and garlic.
