Bang, pop, pow! 10 pet safety tips for loud noises and severe weather
Summer is here, and along with the celebrations, festivals, and holidays that bring loud, exploding fireworks, many states are also entering hurricane, flood, and wildfire season. There’s a lot happening this time of year, which is why it’s so important to keep a close eye on your pets to ensure they’re physically and emotionally safe. Here are ten tips to ease anxieties and protect against severe weather.
- Consider anxiety medication: Some pets are extra sensitive to loud noises, crowds, and sudden changes in their environment. If your pet shakes, hides, becomes aggressive, or seems overly anxious during fireworks, storms, or large gatherings, talk to your vet about anxiety medication or calming supplements. These are designed to help soothe your pet and keep them feeling safe.
- Remove metal collars and harnesses: While rare, lightning can conduct electricity through metal accessories. Plus, these items can be uncomfortable for pets when they’re already distressed. Switch to non-metal leashes and collars during thunderstorms to be on the safe side.
- Monitor air quality: In areas prone to wildfires, smoke can become a daily concern. Keep an eye on local air quality reports, and if it’s poor, keep your pets indoors. Prolonged exposure to smoke can cause respiratory problems and other health issues.
- Seek outdoor shelter: If a sudden downpour hits while you’re walking your pet, find nearby cover or head back to your car right away. If your pet is small enough, carry them to avoid slipping, falling, or running away out of fear.
- Keep doors locked and windows closed: Drown out scary sounds as much as possible. Close and lock all doors and windows, and try playing calming music or leaving the TV on to mask the sound of fireworks or thunder.
- Stay close: Nothing comforts a pet more than their favorite human. Stay close, wrap them in their favorite blanket, and give lots of belly rubs and ear scratches. Your presence is the best way to help them feel secure during stressful moments!
- Have an emergency kit: If you live in an area prone to hurricanes or other natural disasters, create a pet emergency kit with food, water, medications, supplements, and comfort items. If the power goes out or you need to evacuate, you’ll be glad you planned ahead.
- Keep microchips up to date: Make sure your pet’s microchip information includes your current address, phone number, and any medical needs. In case your pet gets lost, this info can help bring them back home safely.
- Never leave your pet alone: Whether it’s a holiday gathering with fireworks or a major storm is rolling in, someone should always stay home with your pet. Cuddles, belly rubs, and a calm presence make a huge difference.
- Evacuate when necessary: If you live in an area that’s vulnerable to hurricanes or other natural disasters, always follow evacuation orders. Every year, pets are left behind due to poor planning. Don’t wait until the last minute—it’s better to be safe than sorry.
