10 ways to celebrate National Dog Month this August
The loving barks of man’s best friend last a lifetime, so it’s only appropriate that dogs have a month dedicated to the loyalty and love they share with the world! Tails wagging, ball chasing, and the endless cuddles dogs reward make them the best pets. Whether you’re celebrating with a pet of your own or simply want to share your appreciation for the favorite pups in your life, here are ten ways to celebrate National Dog Month.
- Switch up their walks: Exploring new places helps pets adapt to different surroundings, pick up new scents, and stay mentally engaged. Try a new route on your daily dog walk or take them to a park with nature and open spaces to frolic. Your dog will enjoy discovering new places and meeting new people.
- Prepare a gourmet doggy meal: If your pup is tired of the usual kibble, treat them to a homemade meal using natural ingredients like chicken, tuna, yogurt, or eggs—just avoid spices, oils, and other ingredients harmful to dogs.
- Gift them some new toys: Toys help burn off extra calories and release pent-up energy. Buying new dog toys changes up their routine and gives them something to play with both with and without you.
- Teach them a new trick: Dogs can learn up to 30 tricks in their lifetime. Learning new tricks provides the mental stimulation dogs need to stay healthy and sharp. It’s also a great way to exercise them while strengthening your bond.
- Have a pet photoshoot: Take your dog on a summer vacation and snap cute photos by the lake, or set up a professional family shoot featuring your dog and its favorite humans. Pictures last a lifetime and will effortlessly capture your time spent together.
- Set up a doggy play date: Dogs need constant socialization to ease anxiety, and all dogs benefit from meeting others to keep walks in the park peaceful and playful. Invite your dog’s favorite furry friend to the park, give them a few treats and toys, and enjoy the pooch party!
- Treat your dog to a spa day: Grooming is important for your dog’s health and comfort. Try a new haircut for your dog at the groomer or give their coat a deep wash and condition to keep them looking and smelling good.
- Show them lots of love: Touch (maybe after treats) is the universal love language of all dogs. Snuggling our pets daily is a requirement, but a few extra hugs and rubs are the best way to show our dogs we love them.
- Donate: You don’t have to have a dog to celebrate National Dog Month. Head to your local animal shelter or research organizations that support dogs. Pet supplies and monetary donations can improve the lives of canines in your community.
- Adopt: Adopt, don’t shop. If you’re considering getting your first dog or adding another one to the family, visit your local adoption center to discover all the dogs waiting for their forever homes. Animal shelters across the country are overcrowded, which results in euthanasia. Choosing adoption over for-profit pet shops and puppy mills can help address this nationwide issue.
